"The Chapel under the Grapevine"

grafJust off İstiklal Caddesi, Asmalimescit is the small, confined area near the Tünel exit of the Tünel-Karaköy funicular that used to be well-known for its many pavement cafes. Since 2011 many of those have been cleared away although there are still many pleasant cafes, restaurants and bars in the area. Sadly, shots bars are proliferating as the businesses struggle to earn enough to pay the rent without their old outdoor tables.

There are no official "sights" in the area but this is where you need to come to find the famous Babylon (http://babylon.com.tr/en/) music venue. Most of the buildings here also date from the latter half of the 19th century. Slowly they are being cleaned up, repaired and found new uses.

Lovers of street art will usually find fine examples of colourful graffiti in this area although these days there are also lots of ugly tags and tatty posters as well.

As soon as you see the piñatas lined up behind the bar you’ll know that you’re in for a Mexican feast at this restaurant that advertizes itself as serving Latin/Borderline cuisine. Fajitos, chimichangas, the whole caboodle, and with the tequila to go with them too.
