PAŞABAHÇE

"The Paşa's Garden"

pasab1Old name: İncirliköy

The Bosphorus suburb of Paşabahçe is best known for the glass once produced in a factory here. The glass lives on (and you can buy it in the eponymous shop on İstiklal Caddesi), the factory has moved elsewhere.

There's little now to lure a foreign visitor since the small Greek Orthodox church just off the main square is usually kept locked. It's dedicated to Sts Constantine and Helena and was built in 1834 after the minority communities were given permission to erect new places of worship.

An old wooden mosque dating back to 1750 was replaced in 1971 with the present over-large concrete version that dominates the main square.

The one thing you might want to do it divert to the waterfront to eat at the small İskele Restaurant housed in what was once the ferry terminal.pasab2

Transport info

Infrequent ferries link Paşabahçe with İstinye on the European shore. Otherwise the easiest way to get is by bus from Üsküdar.
