URKMEZ HOTEL, SELÇUK

Urkmez1What I loved about this 21-room Selçuk city-centre hotel was the way in which the owners had taken a not particularly inspiring high-rise building and, using colour and flair, turned it into something bright, cheerful and original both inside and out. I was suprised at how spacious and light my room was and found the decor very appealing. Anticipating a lot of noise from the nearby bars and restaurants I was relieved to find that little of it actually penetrated (although this might depend on what room you get, of course). My bathroom was on the small side but the air-con worked a treat.

The top-floor breakfast room offers a great view of St John's Basilica and Selçuk Castle, making for an inspiring start to the day. The choice of breakfast items is excellent, and those who're not in a rush to be on their way can browse the books in the small library.

Reception is up a flight of stairs and offers a computer for guest use and a small balcony overlooking the street outside. A small lounge offers a communal TV and lots of information about Ephesus.Urkmez2

The Urkmez has one other big selling point which is that it is a true all-hands-to-the-pump family run hotel. Brothers Cem and Cüneyt preside over arrangements with aplomb but dad is also on hand to offer lifts as and when needed. It's one of those special places where you arrive a stranger and leave a friend.

You'll find the hotel immediately opposite the new Selçuk Belleği museum in the old Tekel warehouse.

Thumbs up: Delightfully original decor, great breakfasts, welcoming atmosphere

Thumbs down: Stairs to reception make the hotel inaccessible for those with mobility problems
