AKÇAKALE (ADAŞEHRİ)

400 DSC04590

Quite white castle                             Population:

In distant northeastern Turkey, on the road running to the east of Cıldır Lake, this pretty small village sits right on the water and is connected to an off-shore island by a gravel causeway, rather like a little Eğirdir without all the development.

On the hillside you’ll see the slight remains of an Armenian chapel, including part of the apse, and further into the island there are traces of an old defensive wall and of a tower.

The meadows here provide the setting for the Lake Çıldır Festival in mid-July.

There are no hotels here and public transport is not timed to suit tourists. Without your own wheels, you will need to hire a taxi in Çıldır to get here. Once here, though, you are not too far away from the splendid sight of Şeytan Kalesi in its inconceivably remote setting.
