DEREKÖY (FİSANDON)

fisan1Just a few km southeast of Karaman, the small village of Dereköy used to be called Fisandon. Today it's a sleepy farming community with a few old adobe and thatch cottages surviving. But its centrepiece - and the one reason that you might want to drop by - is the attractive Kilise Cami, originally built in the seventh or eighth century as a Byzantine church but converted into a mosque by Sinan Paşa in the 16th century.

The body of the church is quite small and simple with an apse added to the usual domed cruciform shape. Its design is almost Romanesque in appearance. The conversion was carried out sensitively with the addition of a simple stone mihrab and mimber inside and a stumpy minaret outside.

Transport info

There's no regular bus to Dereköy so your best bet is to take a taxi from the centre of Karamanfisan3
