DOĞANCAY

Population: around 120

A short diversion east of the road leading from Midyat to Mor Gabriel brings you to the largely abandoned Tur Abdin village of Doğançay which still has a population made up almost half and half of Kurdish Muslims and Suryani Christians.

The local church is not especially exciting although it does have a graveyard with a few imposing memorials suggesting a community that was once quite wealthy. A small Sunday school is still held in a room upstairs from the narthex.

The ruined houses of the village are especially attractive, the moden mosque a complete eye-sore.

Transport info

There are no dolmuşes to get you here although it would be possible to take an İdil dolmuş from Midyat, then walk from the main road. Otherwise pick up a taxi in Midyat and perhaps visit on the way to Mor Gabriel
