HİSARÖNÜ, MARMARIS

hisaronu"Before the Castle"

On the northern arm of the Reşadiye Peninsula, tiny Hisarönü could hardly be more different from its brash namesake near Fethiye.

This Hisarönü is a scattered farming village disturbed only by the sound of the crickets in the eucalyptuses. There's no reason whatsoever for a visitor to venture into the village. Instead the action takes place at two satellite settlements by the sea some 4km apart from each other.

On the Marmaris side of town a pleasant beach has built a name for itself as a venue for watersports holidays with windsurfing especailly popular. On the Bozburun side the Altınkum (Golden Sand) beach is rather an odd set-up with some rather ordinary camping facilities rubbing shoulders with the very ch-chi Golden Key Hotel behind a rather scrubby strip of brownish sand.

If you're not into watersports it may be hard to understand the appeal of Hisarönü since there's precious little else to do here and few shops or other facilities. Surprisingly, despite its name, there's no longer any sign of a castle here unlike at Orhaniye and Selimiye.

Still, if you're in search of a sun and sand family holiday without the noise and size of Marmaris Hisarönü might fit the bill nicely.
