"The Judge's Castle"

kadikalesiTravelling from Turgutreis on the western side of the Bodrum Peninsula to Gümüşlük you will pass through the tiny but endearing settlement of Kadıkalesi where a mosque sits just inland from the beach close to a fine late-Ottoman stone fountain and one of the igloo-shaped gümbets that are a signature feature of the peninsula.

As usual in these parts the sandy beach is little more than a thin strip densely packed with sun loungers but with a long wooden deck from which people can swim. A handful of fish restaurants overlook the shore.

If you continue north just a little way from the mosque you will see, on the inland side of the road, an abandoned 19th-century monastic church.

If you walk uphill to take a closer look you'll find it no more than a shell serving as a picturesque backdrop for social facilities consisting of a swimming pool and cafe (no alcohol) with a fine view back over the resort.

Transport info

Buses run every half-hour or so between Turgutreis and Gümüşlük in summer although the frequency of services probably drops off out of season.
