KÖYCEĞİZ

Lakeside resort                                                         Population: 9,000

koycegiz1Market day: Monday

Köyceğiz is to Dalyan what Kalkan is to Kaş - a smaller, quieter cousin without the historic attractions but with its own special appeal. Here that appeal lies mainly in the beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Köyceğiz.

Few things could be more enjoyable than to stroll along the newly landcsaped promenade as the sun goes down, then to sit down at one of a handful of waterfront restaurants for a fish meal. There are a few hotels and pensions here, a few shops that make a tentative play for the tourist dollar, but this is nothing like Dalyan and all the nicer for it in some ways.

During the day visitors can avail themselves of boat trips across the lake and on to Dalyan to visit the same set of attractions as are on offer there: the mud baths at Sultaniye, the ruins at Kaunos, the beach at İztuzu.

Otherwise there's not, frankly, a lot to do here except kickback and relax. There are a few old Ottoman Greek houses in the back streets and a marble statue of a lion that was taken from Kaunos in the main square. And that's about it. koycegizlion

Transport info

There are hourly buses from Ortaca and Muğla to Köyceğiz as well as less frequent connections to and from Marmaris.

Köyceğiz's otogar is unhelpfully located on the edge of town near the main Marmaris-Dalaman road. Passengers have to change to a local bus to get to and from the town centre about 1.5km away.
