KALECİK

Little Castle of the south           Population: negligible

alec1Near Beyazsu on the road south from Midyat to Nusaybin, it’s worth pausing to inspect the curious, semi-deserted village of Kalecik (Little Castle), constructed around the summit of a steep hill in such a way that the walls of the houses make it look as if it’s fortified.

This is not the village’s only curiosity. In the past, apparently, access to the houses was via their roofs just as it was in distant Çatalhöyük, the famous prehistoric settlement near Konya in Central Anatolia.

Sleeping

There's no way for you to stay here. There are a few hotels in Nusaybin but they're often full. There's a much better choice of places in Midyat.

Transport info

There's no public transport to get you direct to Kalecik. Your best bet will be a taxi from Nusaybin. Get the driver to drop you off afterwards at Beyazsu.
