AKHAN, DENİZLİ

ak1The Akhan i(White Han) s a Selçuk-era caravanserai near Denizli that has just been completely restored.

Built in 1251-52 for the local governor, Seyfettin Karasungur bin Abdullah, it has one of the extravagantly carved portals for which Selçuk buildings were famous, this one unusually incorporating tiny images of animals and birds.

The building now serves as the Akhan Kervansaray Restaurant (tel: 0532-734 6743) but during the day the door is normally locked so that you can only inspect it from the outside.

Transport info

From in front of Denizli bus terminal dolmuşes ply up and down the Ankara road, most of them passing the Akhan.

Alternatively if you plan to visit the Kaklık Mağarası by taxi you could arrange a stop at the Akhan on the way back.ak2
