The "Golden Horsehoe" is conveniently situated in one of the town-centre streets running south from Cumhuriyet Caddesi, İzmit's main drag, to the sea - all the town's main attractions are within easy walking distance as are a wide range of restaurants. There's also a small Migros supermarket nearby.
Bedrooms are quite large, if decorated in a rather austere, old-fashioned style that could do with some updating - the bathrooms are more inviting decoratively speaking than the actual bedrooms. Still, they do come with a-c and big TVs with a choice of English-language programming.
The Altınnal calls itself a three-star hotel but doesn't even rise to stocking its minibars. Certainly, it has none of the extra facilities one would expect of a real three-star. It's mildly overpriced for what it offers but İzmit attracts many business travellers who are prepared to pay over the odds.
Thumbs up: Convenient location for sightseeing, range of English-language TV if that's important to you
Thumbs down: In need of upgrading plus some street noise
