AKŞEMSETTINOĞLU KONAĞI, GÖYNÜK

AksemsettinogluManaged by the same people as the more mundane Göynük Hotel, the glorious Akşemsettinoğlu Konağı in Göynük is an Ottoman-house hotel with perhaps the loveliest top-floor lounge in all Turkey. The bedrooms are wooden-floored, high-ceilinged and unostentatious; indeed there are occasional touches of Turkish kitsch.

The huge top-floor sitting room is ringed with sedirs (bench seats) and is just plain jaw-droppingly beautiful. There's no TV, merely antiques such as the wall clock with Arabic numberals.

Breakfast is sometimes taken Ottoman-style around low tables on the cobbled ground floor although at quiet times you may need to walk back down the road to the Göynük Hotel dining room.

Relatively low prices reflect its isolation.

Thumbs up: Gorgeous sitting area, low prices, quiet location

Thumbs down: Some people won't want to go to Göynük Hotel for breakfast
