anadolu2When it first opened the Anadolu Evleri hotel, housed in a pair of fine old Antep houses, was way ahead of its time, one of those places whose owner had had the imagination to spot the potential in a lovely property that had fallen on hard times.

Even today when many imitators have opened in the town's narrow back streets, the Anadolu Evleri still has that aching air of authenticity about it, the sense of a place that is loved.

My room was a marvellous wood-panelled space, probably once someone's living room, its walls full of cupboards and cabinets, its shuttered windows looking out onto the lovely courtyard with the black and white patterns cut into the ground that are such a feature of the town.

My big bed, white-covered but with no headboard, was designed to be unobtrusive, yet comfortable. Otherwise standing furniture amounted to little more than two bedside tables, and a small table with wooden chairs on which sat a typewriter and a pile of Repubican-era booklets.anadolu1

The bathroom was spacious enough to have an armchair parked in it although some might find the shower a little on the primitive side.

Air con and heating units were designed to be equally unobtrusive and it goes almost without saying that there was no TV or fridge. On the other hand there was a kettle and tray with tea, coffee and bottled water. The wifi worked a treat.

In the morning breakfast is served at long tables set up in the hayat (courtyard) with its beautiful patterned pavement.

The Anadolu Evleri is in a narrow street up a few steps (with a ramp) behind the famous İmam Çağdaş restaurant in the heart of the colourful bazaar area.

Thumbs up: Rooms full of character in a super-convenient location. Great to be away from main-road traffic noise.

Thumbs down: Probably not for those who prioritise mod cons over atmosphere
