anisemsIf you don't want to pay too much for your accommodation in Konya but do want some comforts such as a private bathroom and television then the Hotel Ani Şems might just fit the bill.

In a great location across the road from the small park in which Şems-i Tabrizi, the friend of Mevlana, is buried it's a rather old-fashioned hotel and certainly the rooms are still in need of some modernisation (bedside lights, for example) although the decor has been updated recently. In particular the bathrooms are pretty simple by modern standards.

On the plus side the minibar was stocked with soft drinks and the wifi worked well, although I gave up trying to fire up the television. My room had a very comfortable bed although the air-con unit dripped onto the bedside table in the night.

Perhaps the hotel's best feature is the sprawling ground-floor sitting area chirpily presided over by a couple of parrots and a zebra finch.

In contrast the breakfast room is in the basement which means that there are no windows. The decor also verged on the kitsch. The choice of food was a bit hit and miss - excellent fresh bread but no kaşar (yellow) cheese.

If you don't like your bathroom it doesn't matter too much as you're just steps away from the Mahkeme Hamamı with separate sections for men and women. Nor need you worry about security since the local police are housed in what looks as if it must have been the library of the huge Şerefettin Cami less than two minutes' walk away.

Thumbs up: Great location, reasonable price, decent sitting area

Thumbs down: Rather gloomy breakfast room
