agg1The garden is very much the thing at the Allgau Pension in Pamukkale that takes its name from original owners who had spent many years living in Germany. Centrepiece of the garden is a large swimming pool with loungers lined up round it, but beyond that stand a wonderful row of mature rose bushes, an extraordinary splash of vibrant colour at certain times of year.

Bedrooms open onto the garden on two levels, with the lower rooms just a spit away from the water; the rooms above have seats on the verandah so that their occupants can gaze down on the pool as well.

My bedroom was very comfortable with a good double bed with a firm mattress. The air-con worked a treat as did the television (AlJazeera), a rather unexpected find in a Pamukkale pension as was the kettle with cups and saucers for tea.

Unfortunately the bathroom didn't live up to the high standard set by the bedroom with no hot water in the sink which clearly reused ancient taps from a previous model. The toilet seat was not attached to the bowl. Enough said.agg2

In the morning I shared a pleasant breakfast ready-served on plates with a collection of youthful cats from roundabout gardens. It was only available form 8am to 9am which seemed rather a narrow time frame for a holiday pension.

Thumbs up: Helpful, willing owners, delightful garden, comfortable bedroom

Thumbs down: Bathrooms overdue for modernisation
