acarAt first glance I recoiled from the decor of the bedrooms in Birecik's Hotel Acar. Afterwards, though, I spent a very comfortable night in my room which had a double bed and a single in it, a TV with AlJazeera, good air-conditioning and a fridge (unstocked).

The problem was that the unironed bedcovers clashed with the curtains and wallpaper. Nor were their any headboards or pictures on the wall. On my most recent visit the purple bedcovers had vanished, making the rooms more attractive, although that could just have been because it was high summer.

The bathroom was spacious and had lots of hot water.

Breakfast is served in the Altın Sofra restaurant downstairs. There was nothing wrong with it although it was clearly the cheapest that could be produced. It was also a great shame that it wasn't served on the roof terrace with looks down on the Ulu Cami and over rooftops where people keep and fly pigeons.

The hotel is right in the middle of Birecik, just minutes from the river, the market and the castle. It is, however, on a very noisy corner round which hooting motorbikes roar for much of the day.

Thumbs up: Comfy bed, good bathroom

Thumbs down: 10am checkout, stairs to reception
