ANİTTA HOTEL, ÇORUM

anitta1Approaching the landmark12-floor tower of the five-star Anitta Hotel I wasn’t expecting very much, so it was good to be greeted by a charming and professional receptionist who soon had me sorted out. A notice on the desk indicating dates when the hotel was already booked up suggested an on-the-ball management although another saying that guests could smoke in the rooms (all except 16 of them apparently) was more surprising.

Even in Çorum five-star hotel prices are steep so it was a thrill to discover that rooms in the annexe are much cheaper but still allow guests to use all the hotel facilities. My room boasted a king-sized bed with decent lighting, a-c, a small plasma TV (the card by the bed promising the BBC and CNN turned out to be misleading), reliable wifi and double-glazing to keep street noise at bay. The bathroom, while small, was spotless and well-equipped with towels and toiletries. Décor was a mixture of cream and gold that, while not exciting, was smart and easy on the eye.DSC03143.000

The real plus here is the Yaşam Health Club in the basement which has a really good pool with bar, a Finnish hamam, two saunas and a lovely hamam approached along a candle-lit corridor. Tile panels, scalloped basins, wooden headrests and Moroccanesque lighting made it so much more inviting than most newly restored public hamams. All sorts of massages and therapies are available by appointment. A well-equipped gym completed the line-up of facilities.

Views of Çorum are not all that exciting, frankly, but still the top-floor tower restaurant is a grand place to end the day, whether with the set menu or a pick from an a la carte which is mainly Turkish but also boasts pastas, schnitzels and other Western favourites as well as a long list of wines and rakis.

The hotel seems to cope well with big groups of tourists, conference delegates and partygoers all milling about at the same time while still appearing friendly and welcoming. Breakfast is nothing short of splendid with something hot or cold to suit all appetites.

Thumbs up: Excellent facilities such as spa, great breakfasts, cheaper rooms in annexe

Thumbs down: Building could hardly be described as attractive
