KALEHAN HOTEL, SELÇUK

kalehan1In business since 1980, the Kalehan in Selçuk was a boutique hotel long before the term was even invented. On the northern outskirts of town beside a petrol station, it may not have the most immediately appealing of settings (although the castle does loom over it) but all that is soon forgotten once you amble down the stone steps to a reception filled with all sorts of knick-knacks, most prominently old metal keys.

Rooms ramble around a bit with most overlooking the delightful garden and a small pool that is a real plus in the height of summer (no doubt partly explaining the hotel's appeal to tour groups). Mine was beautifully decorated with just the right combination of crisp white sheets and colourful throws, paired with an inviting divan with equally colourful cushion covers. Most importantly, everything was in working order, with the air-con just right, the TV tuned to BBC World and good reading lights beside the bed. A desk with well-placed sockets and lights was another bonus. kalehan3

My bathroom was small but equipped with a decent slection of toiletries. There was a large bottle of water for sale in the room but the fridge was empty.

There's a restaurant on the ground floor where breakfasts and dinners are served. This was fairly busy when I ate dinner there, and disappointingly two out of three items I asked for were not available. I settled for a spaghetti bolognese that was served without cheese. The fish dishes on other tables looked better.

Breakfast is excellent with a great choice of hot and cold dishes and filter coffee on tap alongside the tea.

Thumbs up: Very inviting bedroom decor, outdoor pool and garden

Thumbs down: Location behind petrol station on main road
