EPHESUS SUITES, SELÇUK

Efessuites1As soon as I stepped through the door of this delightful new addition to the Selçuk hotel stock I was reminded of a British country-house hotel. In part this was a reaction to the unexpected four-poster bed and the upright armchair chairs which, here, eschew the Ottoman prints that are increasingly de rigueur. Instead these were to be found covering the bed, although in dark colours rather than the more run-of-the-mill reds and golds.

The bathroom that came with my room was not huge but it was certainly very swish and inviting, with a new-generation reinforced glass basin and plenty of toiletries.

An unobtrusively placed television set was tuned to BBC World, and the Internet connection was perfect. Efessuites2

A small garden divides the bedrooms on two floors from the breakfast room where the morning spread was full of tempting titbits guaranteed to provide the fuel needed for a long day of sightseeing at Ephesus.

With only four rooms to their name, the Ephesus Suites have so much going for them, not least their location which is the quiet old part of town near the beautiful İsa Bey Cami. There are few places in the world when you can step out of your hotel and be but a short stroll away from the remains of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (in this case the Temple of Diana at Ephesus) but that is the case here. The location also ensures that there is blissfully little noise; in place of the cacophony from competing bars and restaurants here you are likely to hear only the sound of local children playing in the street.

There is no permanent reception at the hotel which is run in conjunction with the Urkmez Hotel in the town centre. You will be given keys to let yourself in and out.

Thumbs up: Gorgeous decor, quiet and convenient location

Thumbs down: Only four rooms so could be booked out once word gets out.
