gulpalas1Refurbished in 2012, the turquoise-tiled Gül Palas (Rose Palace) Hotel is an old favourite landmark buiding slap bang in the middle of Kütahya and very handy for anyone arriving late at night since the servis buses from the bus station drop off nearby.

Bedrooms here are spacious with comfortable beds and pleasingly white coverings. There's plenty of cupboard space and a desk to work at plus a vast TV and a small fridge that stands surprisingly empty. Unfortunately the large TV seems to have taken priority over comfort since no air-conditioning was added in, making the rooms very hot in summer (mine had a fan but this didn't prove adequate to dispel the heat and could only be plugged in near the bed by unplugging one of the bedside lights). Of course this only matters in high summer - but, boy, does it matter then.

gulpalas2Bathrooms are clean, modern and white with adequate toiletries and hair-drier, although in mine it took ages to run enough water to get to the hot when using the sink.

The wifi works a treat.

The light-filled 5th-floor breakfast room-cum-Teras Restaurant has been given an especially flash makeover and is very attractive to look at even if the views are fairly mundane. Breakfast itself was excellent with plenty of choice including fresh böreks.

There's a small sitting area-cum-TV room in the attractive downstairs lobby which features a stunning wall of turquoise tiles. A small lift accesses all floors.

Thumbs up: Great location, spacious rooms, lovely breakfast room

Thumbs down: No air-con
