aatci1In a great location just round the corner from Aksaray's fine city-centre square, the Saatçioğlu Hotel bills itself as four-star although that is probably rather generous. That said, I had a lovely spacious room that was only on the dark side because I had specifically asked for one away from the street noise. That meant having a view of the building immediately adjacent.

My bedroom featured a green and brown colour scheme that was reasonably modern. It was certainly very comfortable with air-con that worked, a mini-bar stocked (unusually for this part of the world) with alcoholic beverages, a television with AlJazeera and lots of room to spread out in. Only the wifi let me down with a connection that went up and down with irritating frequency.

In comparison with the bedroom the bathroom was on the small side but managed a corner bathtub and lots of hot water.

The top-floor features a restaurant with a fine view out over the square to Hasan Dağı. I wanted to eat there but was driven away by football blaring from huge screens in both the two dining rooms. The alternative was the colourful Icemar Cafe on the ground floor which offered the same menu sans the view.

This is where breakfast is served in the mornings. It's a good spread with lots of choice and omelettes etc available on request. The cafe decor is very of the minute with a mix of comfy padded chairs and wicker ones. In summer it sprawls out into the adjoining square.aatci2Icemar Cafe

The ground floor also incorporates an inviting TV lounge area where perhaps I might have got a better wifi signal if I'd tried.

Aksaray is not a big tourist town so you shouldn't perhaps expect too much sightseeing information to be available.

Thumbs up: Great location, lovely view from restaurant, sizeable rooms

Thumbs down: Too many TVs in public areas, dodgy wifi connection
