Recently renovated, the Hotel Kaplan sits on Kıbrıs Caddesi, Diyarbakır's main hotel strip, just opposite a basalt tower that was once part of the city's forifications.

There are a wide variety of rooms so you might want to look at more than one. Mine had a queen-sized double bed and was sensibly designed although the dark-brown fittings were a little on the old-fashioned side. A handy unit combined a fridge and storage space and there was a desk as well. The wall-mounted TV offered AlJazeera, the air con worked well and the wifi kept going throughout the evening.

Modern bathrooms have slightly small sinks but decent showers with plenty of hot water.

The ground-floor breakfast appears to belong to the original version of the hotel. It's a large room with the breakfast tables crowded into one corner and the decor is, frankly, quite grim. On the other hand the choice of breakfast items is quite reasonable and you do get given a mug rather than a small cup for coffee.

Thumbs up: Everything works well in bedrooms, handy location

Thumbs down: Steps up to breakfast room unhelpful for mobility-impaired guests
