kalehOn the quieter western side of Kaş, just metres away from the remains of the old theatre, stands this lovely hotel with German management which is a great favourite of mine. The building itself is a three-storey blue and white structure, pleasant if unexceptional, but it overlooks a garden with views straight onto the sea which means that front-facing rooms get glorious unimpeded sea views all the way to Meis (Kastellorizo).

Bedrooms are simple but designed with impeccable taste: green-painted wooden furnishings and decorations made from seashells. They come with air-con rather than TVs, and private bathrooms that are spotlessly clean.

Breakfasts with endless choice are laid out in the dining room but usually eaten outside on the small patio. The one snag is that German tour groups usually fill most of the rooms which may mean sharing your breakfast table with German speakers.

There's a small sitting area in the lobby and a few tables and chairs outdoors for balmy evenings.

On my most recent visit I stayed in the second building behind the original Kale which has rooms with equally pleasant fixtures and fittings but only distant sea views from some rooms.

Just along the road the local mosque was converted out of what was once the Greek Orthodox church.

Thumbs up: Great, quiet location, delightful sea-facing garden, good breakfasts.

Thumbs down: Often full with tour groups
