OSMANLI SARAY, KASTAMONU

ossarayRight in the heart of Kastamonu, the imposing building that once housed the belediye (municipality) has been turned into a hotel just across the road from a hamam (Turkish bath).

Like the Four Seasons Sultanahmet in İstanbul, the Osmanlı Sarayı (Ottoman Palace)  was designed in First National Architectural style as was usual with public buildings in the early 20th century when architects were struggling to create an authentic Turkish style incorporating elements of the Selçuk and Ottoman. It was completed in 1915 and Atatürk was a visitor.

Not surprisingly, given its origins, rooms are rather large and can seem a little bare. It’s an atmospheric place to stay in a great location though.

Thumbs up: Housed in fine, centrally located historic building

Thumbs down: Internal decor not as splendid as building
