YARIŞKAŞI KONAĞI, MUDURNU

yaris1To the right of the road as you come into Mudurnu from Bolu, the welcoming Yarışkaşı Konağı looks like an Ottoman House but is actually a careful reproduction. In atmosphere it's probably more like a pension than a hotel although it's none the less comfortable for all that.

My room on the second floor had a sloping ceiling and fittings that were mainly pine. The bench seat running below the window was a pleasing nod to authentic Ottoman decor but that didn't mean there wasn't also a small TV and a good Internet connection.

The bathroom was minuscule and the taps were on the rusty side but somehow a half-tub had been shoehorned in which could be a blessing in winter.yaris2

The rooms and stairwell are decorated with photos of old Mudurnu and of traditional local life - you must take your shoes off before walking along the corridors as would be usual in local houses.

The large ground-floor breakfast room doubles as an on-off restaurant.

The town centre is only a few minutes' walk away.

Thumbs up: Quiet, modestly-priced with family atmosphere

Thumbs down: No lifts so no good for the mobility-impaired
