YENİ ÇINAR HOTEL, TOKAT

yencinRight on busy Gazi Osman Paşa in the centre of Tokat near the Taşhan, the Yeni Çınar is depressingly unlovely to look at and has a lobby with absolutely no soul. Ask for a quiet room at the back and on one of the upper floors and you may be pleasantly surprised to find it large, well-equipped with cupboards and with a decor that, while old-fashioned, isn't too alarming (although the pillars in the middle of some rooms are a bit odd). The bathrooms too are spacious with walk-in showers.

Rooms come with air-con and a small plasma TV. From the windows you can look out over one of Tokat's older mahalles (neighbourhoods).

Unfortunately breakfast lets the side down badly. This was the first Turkish hotel in which I'd ever had to eat packeted bread instead of fresh bread. I also had to ask for Nescafe despite the hotel's supposed three-star rating.

There's a restaurant on the first floor for days when you're too tired to venture out in the evening.

Thumbs up: Big bedrooms and bathrooms, quiet rooms at back

Thumbs down: No fresh bread at breakfast, ugly exterior
