ZEYNEP HANIM KONAĞI, GAZİANTEP

zeyhanTucked up in the narrow streets of Antep's restored Bey Mahalle, the Zeynep Hanım Konağı has a great location although most of the building appears to be a copy of an old Antep house rather than an original.

I was a little concerned that the bedrooms would be noisy but mine was set at the far side of an inner courtyard well away from the bars outside. Spacious and comfortable, it suffered from a few house-keeping problems -curtains that had come off their hooks, a fuse box with no cover - but the air con and wifi worked well and the TV rose to AlJazeera. A kettle with tea and coffee was very welcome on a cold day.

Much of the potential cupboard space was actually used for displaying old artefacts although the furnishings went for a vaguely French Empire look.

Unfortunately I was completely put off by the small, dark breakfast room. In summer presumably everyone would sit outside in the small courtyard which would mean that my bedroom would be extremely noisy. But this is not one of the lovely Antep courtyards with a geometric pattern cut into the ground. Instead it's a very ordinary space which has been equipped with very so-so tables and chairs.

There's a small but rather dark lounge next to the reception desk. In fact "dark" seemed to be the leit motif of the hotel.

Thumbs up: Comfortable rooms, great location

Thumbs down: Bathroom in my room up a couple of steps, disappointing breakfast room
