horonOne street back from Trabzon's Atatürk Alanı on the seaside, the Horon is a long-lived and reliable hotel, especially good for single women. A recent makeover has brought the bedrooms up-to-date in terms of fittings and decoration. Expect TV, fridge, air-con, a small desk to work at and comfortable beds. My bathroom was minuscule with barely room to swing a loo brush, let alone a cat in.

The breakfast terrace boasts great sea views - you could almost believe yourself back in Sultanahmet looking out at the Sea of Marmara. The choice of breakfast items is also good, and you're more likely to have to endure talking-heads news on the television than blaring MTV.

As a bonus, the Horon faces onto a row of shops amongst which are some of Trabzon's finest delicatessens selling a mouth-watering array of local cheeses and honey.

And "horon"? It's the name of a popular type of Black Sea folk dance.

Thumbs up: Central location, smart but unflashy decor

Thumbs down: Some street noise inevitable. Prices a little high (as is typical of Trabzon)
