Hansacami1Market day: Friday

Havsa is a sleepy small Thracian town south-east of Edirne and worth visiting only to see a minor work of Sinan in the shape of the Sokollu Mehmed Paşa Cami, built in 1577 and once part of a bigger complex with an access arch rather like the one down the road in Lüleburgaz.

The mosque itself is small, with a single dome and minaret, although its marble mihrab and mimber are very elegant. Originally it must have been fronted by a portico but this is now lost. Havsacami2

Beside the mosque the rear wall of the primary school looks to have started out as the wall, perhaps of a medrese attached to the mosque. Down the road the ruinous bathhouse and a corner fountain are slated for restoration.

Otherwise there are one or two old houses in the back streets but that's about it.

Transport info

Minibuses to Havsa leave from beside the Carrefour Ekspres on Talatpaşa Caddesi in Edirne (20km); get there on a bus from the Orduevi bus stop at the town-centre end of the same road.

Alternatively head for Edirne otogar and take a bus heading for Keşan or Çanakkale

From Havsa you can continue to Uzunköprü on a Keşan or Çanakkale bus. Havsacami3
