aber1In a wonderfully convenient location on Hükümet Caddesi just off Anafartalar Caddesi, the road leading up to Ankara Kalesi, the pretty little Berlitz Hotel is housed in an early 20th-century building whose facade has been protected even while the interior has been completely modernised.

My third-floor bedroom was spacious and inviting with an attractive brown, cream and gold colour scheme that worked very well. The bed was big and comfortable although the sheet was on the narrow side. There was air-con and central heating plus a small TV with Al Jazeera.

It's always wise to ask for a room at the back of city hotels but here this meant that my room scooped a view of the castle as well as being quiet.

The bathroom came with a tub.

The breakfast room is on the ground floor beyond the reception. There's a small comfortable sitting area in front of the reception desk. aber2

The ground floor of the hotel is occupied by a large pastry shop that retains some of its old mirrored cupboards with the names of the different items that were originally sold here etched on them. Tasty Alman pastaları (German cakes) seemed to be the most favoured purchases.

The hotel is just round the corner from the Hacı Bayram Veli Cami and some of the regenerated Ottoman housing surrounding it. It's also close to several cheap traditional lokantas and the sort of shops aimed at the ordinary day-to-day shopper.

Thumbs up: Lovely old building in a great location that has been pleasingly modernised.

Thumbs down: Steep flight of steps up to first-floor reception rule this hotel out for those with mobility problems.
