gulerAn old familiar that has just been given a makeover, the Grand Güler is a conspicuous feature of Kıbrıs Caddesi, Diyarbakır's hotel strip near the Dağ Kapı landmark. A sprawling, comfortable sitting area fills the ground floor with the reception desk shoehorned into a relatively small corner of it.

The old blue decor has been replaced with a more modern cream and brown colour scheme that comes with a wall-mounted TV (Al Jazeera, CNBC-e), centrally-controlled air-con and a large empty fridge whose only function appears to be to make a noise. The radiators are also centrally controlled which I thought a fairly serious flaw.

My bedroom was comfortable enough but the bathroom was another matter, so small that to use the toilet you had to ease your legs under the sink. On another visit the bathroom was still small but had been updated to modern standards.

Breakfast is served in a second-floor dining room and is usually pretty good, with soup available alongside all the standards.

Up the road near the Dağ Kapı the New Tigris Hotel is under the same ownership and the rooms are decorated in the same style. Prices are slightly higher which seemed to buy a bigger TV and a nicer top-floor dining room. But my room there had more petty failings that the one in the Grand Güler which was also slightly quieter.

Thumbs up: Handy location close to old city. Clean and secure.

Thumbs down: Petty housekeeping problems, usually quickly rectified. Steps up to main entrance
