grandnigdeOverlooking Niğde's main square, the Grand Hotel is not a particularly prepossessing building. However, it does offer the highest level of comforts to be had about town.

My bedroom featured twin beds with a calming fern and brown colour scheme. There was plenty of storage space as well as a usable desk. The minibar was stocked although not with alcohol. The air-con worked well, the wifi more intermittently. BBC World was available on the wall-mounted TV. Despite the location the room was well-insulated against noise so long as the window was closed.

My bathroom was fairly inviting, with a decent shower and a reasonable range of toiletries.

Breakfast is served in the ninth-floor restaurant which has a fine view of Niğde including, from one end, the castle mount with the belltower and Alaadin Cami. There was an excellent choice of hot and cold food - and for once it was possible to escape the attentions of the ubiquitous TV,

The breakfast room turns into a restaurant at night. The fixed menu changes daily but there is also an a la carte version featuring most Turkish staples.

There's a large sitting area on the ground floor but it's not particularly inviting.

Does it meet the advertised four-star criteria? Not really since there are no extra pubic facilities although the underground parking facilities will come as a relief to some visitors.grandnigde2

Thumbs up: Quiet, comfortable bedrooms close to main attractions, excellent breakfasts, private parking

Thumbs down: Rather soulless lounge area
