In the Tur Abdin area southeast of Midyat lies the village of Güngören which is dominated by the huge restored Syrian Orthodox (Suryani) Church of St Stephen with an inscription dating it back to 778-9. It was once decorated with frescoes.
The village itself is full of attractive old stone houses separated from each other by rocky stone paths; the single ugliest building is the concrete mosque added to it in 1952. From near it there is a fine view out towards the monastery at Mor Gabriel.
Many locals keep sheep and goats so you are likely to see huge flocks congregating around the waterholes.
Transport info
Without your own car you will need to hire a taxi in Midyat to get to the village. A visit can easily be combined with one to the monastery at Mor Gabriel (2km).
