Seven km south-east of Karapınar lies Meke Gölü, a once lovely volcanic crater lake with an island in the middle of it rather like the jam in a doughnut. Unfortunately, over the last 20 years that water has been allowed to drain away. The picture shown here was taken on 22 May 2015. It tells a sorry story.

Cheer yourself up by heading instead for nearby Acıgöl, another crater filled by a lake which still survives. It’s a shame about the three prefabs dumped along its shore for no very obvious reason but it’s still a nice spot for a picnic. acigol1Acıgöl
