“Burnt Land”

Old name: Katakekaumene (Greek)

If you have your own car, it’s worth knowing that to the east of Kula a side road leads to Yanıkyöre and some dramatic rock formations reminiscent of the more famous fairy chimneys in Cappadocia; they cover an area of roughly 300 square km. It was mentioned in his Geographies by Strabo who called the area Katakekaumene, meaning “Burnt Land” just like the current Turkish name.

In 2013 Yanıkyöre was designated a Volcanic Geopark by UNESCO, the only such example in Turkey.
