“Poplar by the Sea” Population: 6,500
Market day: Thursday
On the northwest side of the Bodrum Peninsula, pretty Yalıkavak is centred on a harbourful of gülets but also boasts several inviting getaway-from-it-all boutique hotels up on the hillside. It provided the setting for Jack Scott’s 2012 memoir Perking the Pansies which dished the dirt on the goings-on in the local expat community.
This is not a place where there’s a great deal to do beyond stretching out on a sunbed during the day, then adjourning to a bar or restaurant in the evening. The only “sight” is a renovated windmill on the waterfront where a few picturesque fishing boats still bob up and down beside the larger boats waiting to take visitors on a cruise around the bay.
If you need something more specific to fill up a day you could always walk the 3km up to the abandoned hillside village of Sandıma or take the bus south to Gümüşlük to explore the ruins of Myndos.
