“Mayor Turgut”       Population: 6,000

Old name: Karatoprak

Market day: Saturday

Favourite son: Admiral Turgut Reis (who else?)

Right across on the far western side of the Bodrum Peninsula, Turgutreis is something of a concrete jungle despite being romantically named after Admiral Turgutreis (1484-1565) who wrestled this part of the coast away from the Crusaders.

The seafront promenade makes a pleasant enough place for an early evening stroll and there’s a fairly attractive fishing harbour. The beach is narrow and densely packed with sunbeds. Make your escape on a day trip by boat round the bay.

Back from the shore there’s an undercover area of shops catering almost entirely for the tourist trade.turgut2“Ege (Aegean)” on the harbour wall

Sleeping

There are many hotels in Turgutreis but they are mainly designed for package holidays. You will almost certainly get a better deal if you make a reservation from outside Turkey.

Transport info

Regular dolmuşes ply back and forth between Bodrum otogar and Turgutreis via Ortakent. There are also buses north to Gümüşlük and Yalıkavak.

In high season you can catch a ferry to Kalymnos in Greece from here.
