In summer the Çandır Kanyon (also known as the Yazılı Kanyon National Park), to the south of Eğirdir in the Turkish Lake District, is often heaving with picnicking families. Come mid-September, however, and it slumps back into its habitual solitude and makes a great place to come for a quiet stroll amid the pines.

There’s not much to do here apart from admire the walls of the gorge and look for elderly inscriptions on the rock which are increasingly overlaid with modern tagging, but it’s a beautiful spot, especially if you come here for an alfresco lunch with friends.

Transport info

You really need a car to reach the canyon. Pension owners in Eğirdir will be happy to organise a car for you which would enable you to visit the lakeside Kovada Gölü National Park and/or the Kasnak Forest as well.
