When thinking about ancient cities once enclosed by walls Turkey is not necessarily the country that most readily springs to mind, with the striking exception of İstanbul where from Roman times onwards huge walls wrapped themselves around what was first Byzantium and then Constantinople.

In actual fact Turkey is home to several once-walled cities although later development often obscures that fact. These are some of the places where you can still see stretches of the walls intact:

Eski Malatya/Battalgazi

İstanbul

İznik

Kayseri

Kıyıköy

Şanlıurfa
