Town called Wednesday                        Population: 55,000

The curiosity of its name aside, this small town due east of Samsun by the mouth of the Yeşilırmak river is not somewhere you’re likely to want to stop, especially given that its mosques must be some of the ugliest in the country.

It’s possible, although not certain, that the area of Fatih in İstanbul that is called Çarşamba was so named because it was settled by people from this area. It’s just as likely it’s named after its big Wednesday market though.
