Small olive-oil-making town Population: 12,500
Market day: Friday
Just inland from Edremit on the North Aegean coast, Havran boasts a lively market that was one of the inspirations for İstanbul chef Didem Şenol’s cookery book, Aegean Flavours.
On any other day of the week, the main reason to come here is to take a quick turn around the back streets, which contain some fine examples of old Ottoman architecture alongside the odd elderly olive-oil factory. The best of the houses is in Cumhuriyet Caddesi opposite the Ebubekir Cami. You might also stumble across the statue of Havranlı Ömer Çavuş, a local hero of the Turkish War of Independence (1919-23).
Transport info
There are frequent minuses to Havran from the otogar in Edremit (4km).
