“Pomegranate Lake”
If you’re driving west through Cappadocia from the underground city at Derinkuyu to Güzelyurt or the Ihlara Valley via the “underground city” at Gaziemir you might want to divert briefly to the left of the highway to see the impressive, ice-blue crater lake at Narlıgöl.
The lake is some 65-70m deep and 2,500m in circumference. The thermal water found in the vicinity comes out of the ground at around 65 degrees in temperature and at 110 litres per second, making this an ideal spot for the development of spa tourism. It’s extremely unfortunate, then, that the two thermal hotels that guard the approach to the lake are architectural carbuncles, one of them seemingly modelled on a local wheat factory.
