‘Doesn’t Give Water”     Population: 1,500

Old name: Filidon, Floita (Greek)

If you’re driving west from Derinkuyu to Gaziemir, Guzelyurt or the Ihlara Gorge in Cappadocia you may spot, to the right of the road, a large arch advertising the start of Suvermez, a small, not especially pretty village whose old houses, like those of Gaziemir, are built of dark volcanic stone.

The lack of water hereabouts apparently meant that the locals were unable to keep animals or grow many crops. Instead they supposedly grew flax and made linseed oil from it, the only people in the area to do so.

Suvermez lacks any great sights to stop for. However, you may want to take a quick look at the shell of what was once the huge 19th-century Greek Orthodox Church of Hagios Giorgios (St George). Photos taken thirty years ago show it in far better condition and without the graffiti that disfigure it now. Today both the roof and the western facade have disappeared.

Sleeping

There is nowhere to stay here. The nearest good choice of accommodation is in Guzelyurt.

Transport info

There are some buses to Suvermez from Aksaray but really this is somewhere best visited with your own wheels.
