Hittite base camp                            Population: 1,500

Pretty little Boğazköy (also known as Boğazkale) is the closest settlement to the Hittite ruins of Hattuşa and Yazılıkaya and it’s well worth planning an overnight stay here to experience real rural tranquility, disturbed only by the sounds of honking geese and braying donkeys. You won’t find much to do in the evening, but you should go home completely refreshed and a whole lot wiser about a little-remembered slice of Anatolia’s ancient history.

A museum opened here in 2011. More finds from the local sites are on display in Çorum Museum and in Ankara’s Museum of Anatolian Civilisations.
