“Old Black Rocks”
Four km inland from Gümüşlük on the western side of the Bodrum Peninsula, high up on the hillside, is the pretty small village of Eski Karakaya where the old stone houses have been snapped up, restored and turned into summer homes by a mixture of Turks in search of an escape from the city and foreigners with an eye to the view.
With your own car you might want to pop up to take a look – and to gaze in horror at some of the continuing building work on the way there – but there’s nothing to actually do here except in August when an arts festival takes place on a natural platform just beneath the village.
Gazing out to see you will have a view of the Greek island of Kos ahead of you. More interestingly, you will see two tiny uninhabited islands (Kardak/İmia) that look almost like breasts floating on the water. Unbelievably Greece and Turkey almost went to war over these pinpricks back in 1996.
Transport info
No buses serve Eski Karakaya so without a car you will need to make arrangements with a taxi driver in Gümüşlük. You won’t need much waiting time.
