“Walnut Grove” Population: 28,000
Other name: Hazo (Kurdish)
Driving from Batman to Siirt the road follows the Batman Çayı (river) for some of the way. After the road junction for Silvan – called Üçyol – the scenery becomes particularly impressive. Then you arrive at Kozluk which doesn’t look like somewhere you would want to stop.
That’s because Eski Kozluk (Old Kozluk) is not the part down by the main road but instead the part a couple of km uphill to the north of it, accessible by a şehiriçi minibus.
There’s not a great deal to see here either although the İbrahim Bey Cami is a stone Selçuk edifice dating back to 1117 with a splendid minaret reminiscent of some of those in Bitlis and with carvings on the facade similar to those in Mardin. Sadly the stone used for the door and window-frames was soft so that the decorative details are almost worn away.
Looming at the end of the high street are the remains of the small Hazo Kalesi (Castle). There’s a path if you want to climb up and appreciate the views out over the hilly setting.
Transport info
