“Selim’s Town” Population: 4,900
Old name: Mendelya
Market day: Saturday
Not to be confused with the better known Selimiye on the Hisarönü Peninsula, this Selimiye on the road between Bafa and Milas is a small market town with an attractive old quarter on the hillside away from the main road.
Here the main attractive is the lovely Abdul Fettah Ağa Cami that dates back to 1798 but looks considerably older because of the beautiful stonework and elaborate portico. Nearby stand the remains of a sizeable han that appears to be lived in today. The hamam nearby was restored in the 2010.
A few of the older houses in this part of town have fine wooden top-floor verandahs on a stone base.
The Saturday market is a lively event attracting villagers from all around. A few of the older women still wear regional dress, especially those from the village of Çömakdağ. Many of them wear floral-printed dresses or skirts over şalvar with a clashing floral print.
