West of Yatağan, the small settlement of Turgut stands in the shadow of a vast power station and mine. Beyond the power station, the modern settlement of Yeşilbağcılar is equally unpromising. Turgut itself, however, is surprisingly pleasant, a sleepy little place where the sound of running water offers a pleasing backdrop.
Within the village there is one official attraction, the Osman Hamdi Bey Konağı, an impressive stone house with wooden shutters and verandahs that was used by the famous archaeologist and artist, Osman Hamdi Bey, who excavated the ruins just down the road at Lagina. Unfortunately although it has been restored and is theoretically open to the public you may well arrive to find the gates locked.
Also in town is the İlyas Bey Cami, a Menteşeoğlu structure dating back to 1311 although much altered over the centuries. One wall, however, is still pocked with pieces of old masonry, some with Greek inscriptions, possibly borrowed from Lagina. The windows also show off fine brickwork patterns.
The back streets also house some pleasing old Milas-style houses with tall brick-and-stone chimneys.
The ruins of Lagina are 1.5km back down the road towards the power station.
Transport info
There are hourly buses from Yatağan to Turgut. They pass the track leading to Lagina if you don’t want to walk both ways from Turgut.
