Old name: Kıroba, Gyroba

Market day: Sunday

Five km south of Çine is Eski Çine, most of whose population has long since moved to the bigger town.

There’s one reason why you might want to pull off the main road and drive through the village which is the Ahmet Gazi Cami, a fine building dating back to 1308 distinguished by a large, flat-topped dome but without a minaret. If you look closely at the walls, and window and doorframes you’ll see pieces of marble removed from one of the nearby ancient cities: Alabanda, Alında or Gerga. Inside, the mosque is a vast unadorned space. The mimber may not be especially old but does feature some fine folk carving.

The hill behind the village hints at the dramatic rocky landscape that breaks out further south along the road towards Yatağan.

Transport info

Minibuses run from Çine to Eski Çine and back again but may force you to linger there longer than you want while you wait for other passengers hoping to make the same journey.
